Oceans

Lately, my favorite song has been “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong United.  Even though I really like the song, it scares the crap out of me.

There are videos out there where the band discusses the meaning of the song.  Basically, it’s about Peter getting out of the boat and walking on water toward Jesus.

But there’s one part of the song in particular that is especially frightening.

It goes like this:

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

That’s a scary prayer.  To let go and have complete faith and trust in God that He would lead us in the right direction is counter to what we’ve been taught all of our lives.  We’ve been taught to do it all on our own, to be independent, to not rely on anyone but ourselves.  This handful of words is telling God we want Him to put us in challenging positions and places so that we can fully trust in Him.  In those tough places/situations, our faith will be made stronger because He is with us always and when we come out of the other side of the situation, we will see that He was and still is with us and He will be glorified because of it.

We don’t have to do it all on our own, it’s ok to be dependent on God, we don’t have to only rely on ourselves; we can rely on God.

It’s a scary thought, but we can do it.  As tough and scary as the first few lines sound, keep in mind the last two – our faith will be made stronger in the presence of the Savior.

If you haven’t heard the song, here’s a video with the lyrics:
